The Inspiration Behind the Blends

From Tea to Shining Tea!

Taste the rich and vibrant flavors of America that are woven into each blend in The High Notes of Freedom: An American Tea Anthology collection. They come from all across the country, including these dedicated tea farms and gardens:

CatSpring Yaupon

Texas

CatSpring Yaupon crafts regenerative organic certified (ROC), naturally caffeinated yaupon into hand-roasted tea. A nourishing, wild, native plant traditionally used by Native Americans for medicinal and ceremonial purposes, naturally uplifting and nourishing yaupon is said to fuel a steady energy, spark joy and support deep focus without jitters or crash. CatSpring Yaupon is the world-wide leader in sustainable yaupon production and is committed to ethical labor practices through its people first employment program. CatSpring’s Founder, Abbiane Falla, is a 4th generation Texan and member of the Chickasaw Nation.

Minto Island Growers

Oregon

In 1988 Rob Miller and John Vendeland planted an experimental half acre of Camellia sinensis sourced from around the world. Not knowing whether the plants would survive, to their surprise the plants thrived – and continue to thrive in the fertile Willamette Valley at Minto Island Growers in Western Oregon. Minto Island Growers produces certified organic, handpicked small-batch green, white and black teas that are sweet, aromatic, smooth, and revered for their freshness.

Charleston Tea Garden

South Carolina

The Charleston Tea Garden is located on Wadmalaw Island in South Carolina, an area protected from commercial development and rich in natural beauty. Wadmalaw’s sandy soil, subtropical climate, and abundant rainfall offer the perfect setting to grow Camellia sinensis. The Charleston Tea Garden spans 127 acres and cultivates over 320 varieties, producing nine unique flavors. It has a rich history and became part of the Bigelow Tea family in 2003, when Eunice and David Bigelow purchased the farm and partnered with local tea expert Bill Hall, bringing a shared vision of preserving and celebrating American-grown tea to life.

Tea Hawaii & Company

Husband and wife Chiu Leong and Eva Lee are the founders of Tea Hawaii & Company. Within the natural rainforest on the summit of Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano, and with deep respect for the land, they produce a fine variety of black, white, green and oolong teas, all smooth and unique in flavor.  Together they’re furthering tea culture and expanding Hawaii’s developing tea industry through collaboration and partnership with fellow Hawaiian tea growers, offering rare, premium teas grown in the spirit of Aloha.

The Great Mississippi Tea Company

After Hurricane Katrina devastated their area and tree plantation in 2005, Jason McDonald and Timmy Gipson, owners and operators of The Great Mississippi Tea Company, pivoted to growing tea. Their journey, which began with six tea plants in the backyard, has grown to nearly 40,000 plants! They’ve delivered multiple award-winning teas to the US market and offer a selection of quality loose-leaf teas including Black, Oolong, Green, Pine Needle and Yellow – all grown sustainably, without pesticides or fungicides, and processed in the USA!

Red Lake Nation

Minnesota

A sacred staple of the Ojibwe, "Manoomin" or wild rice is not really a rice, but an aquatic grass seed. It is native to North America and the only grain indigenous to the continent. Red Lake Nation's wild rice is cultivated in its natural Minnesota shallow water habitat — untouched by modern agriculture and traditionally hand-harvested by skilled foragers. Their KC's Best Hand-harvested Wild Rice is done this way also. The foragers gently navigate the waters by canoe, dedicated to preserving their delicate ecosystems. Once harvested, wild rice is wood-parched, giving it a smoky and earthy flavor.
